Texas Commitment Procedures
Schools:
- School counselors should promote the incorporation of effective strategies for suicide prevention in their school’s counseling programs and services.
- Parents/caregivers have rights to their childrens mental health care
- The Department of State Health Services must have an up to date list of suicide prevention programs for public schools
Youth and Family Services:
- Minors can receive counseling for suicide prevention without having to get consent from their parents/caregivers.
- Suicide attempts committed by children should be reported to the Texas DFPS
Mental Health Services:
- If a person may harm themselves or others, they may be court ordered to be admitted into a psychiatric unit
- Individuals who were convicted of assisting a suicide may
not be employed in certain state-regulated facilities
Civil Action/Lawsuit:
- 9-1-1 can be used for transfer to suicide prevention hotlines
- Defendants in lawsuits may not be held responsible if the person suing them attempted to commit suicided resulting in injuries
