Suicide is the act of intentionally ending one's own life. Before the action is committed, there are risk factors, assessments, plans, and procedures that can be considered and applied for prevention. We provide this information below.

Texas Commitment Procedures

 

Schools:

  • School counselors should promote the incorporation of effective strategies for suicide prevention in their school’s counseling programs and services.
  • Parents/caregivers have rights to their childrens mental health care
  • The Department of State Health Services must have an up to date list of suicide prevention programs for public schools

Youth and Family Services:

  • Minors can receive counseling for suicide prevention without having to get consent from their parents/caregivers.
  • Suicide attempts committed by children should be reported to the Texas DFPS

Mental Health Services:

  • If a person may harm themselves or others, they may be court ordered to be admitted into a psychiatric unit
  • Individuals who were convicted of assisting a suicide may
    not be employed in certain state-regulated facilities

Civil Action/Lawsuit:

  • 9-1-1 can be used for transfer to suicide prevention hotlines
  • Defendants in lawsuits may not be held responsible if the person suing them attempted to commit suicided resulting in injuries
